Because sometimes it’s not a wardrobe problem, it’s a brain fog problem. These are some of the looks I come back to when I’m standing in front of my wardrobe thinking, “I own nothing,” while surrounded by perfectly good clothes.

This post is a follow-up to my original 7 outfit formulas to nail the in-between weather (which clearly hit a nerve, or at least a well-dressed corner of the internet). This time, I’m leaning even harder into styling contrast, texture, and pieces you already own, yes, even that one chaotic skirt you bought in a brief but powerful moment of party optimism.

Whether you’re dressing for a confusing forecast, an “I need to look like I tried” workday, or just want to wear leopard print with intention, these formulas are here to do the heavy lifting. Save them. Repeat them. Tweak them into your own thing. And maybe even enjoy getting dressed again.

1. Cardigan + T-shirt + Silk Scarf + Wide-Leg Trousers

For those mornings when your brain can’t string an outfit together, start here. This formula is as easy as it gets, but looks considered, layered, and vaguely French in a “yes, I do own a butter dish” kind of way.

The cardigan brings warmth and softness, the trousers give it structure, and the t-shirt peeking out underneath? That’s the texture play that makes it look like you thought this through. Add a silk scarf around your neck, your hair, or your bag, and suddenly it’s not “just a cardigan outfit.” It’s a styling choice.

Final touches: Not a scarf person? Try a bold earring or a statement lip instead. Want to make it more relaxed? Switch the trousers for denim and the cardigan for something mohair and oversized. Still works. Still chic. Still not panic-dressing.

Outfit 1: Scarf / earrings / t-shirt / blue cardigan / trousers / suede bag / suede boots // Outfit 2: Stripe top / red cardigan / scarf / trousers / suede bag / trainers

2. Joggers + Shirt + Blazer or Light Coat

This is what happens when your brain says “sweatpants,” but your schedule says “visible to the public.” The jogger-and-shirt combo is the ultimate styling loophole: all the comfort of loungewear, with the illusion of effort, especially when you add a structured layer over the top.

Go with a crisp white shirt for contrast, or something oversized and striped for a slightly off-duty gallery intern vibe. Then top it off with a blazer or a light trench to pull the whole thing into “this was intentional” territory. It’s giving casual, tailored, and a little bit smug about knowing how to wear leopard print pants in broad daylight.

Final touches: Add a brooch or bold sunglasses if you want people to assume you read The Gentlewoman and not just Instagram captions. If you’re going with trainers, choose something polished or textured, more Posh Spice, less Sporty Spice.

Outfit 1: Trench coat / hoops / sunglasses / white shirt / leopard print joggers / leather mules // Outfit 2: Shirt / blazer / floral brooch / velvet joggers / suede bag / suede trainers

3. Roll Neck + Shirt + Jeans

This is transitional layering at its smartest. The roll neck acts like your base layer of seasonal competence, while the shirt adds structure, and the jeans? Well, they’re jeans. Reliable, grounding, and incapable of betraying you.

This combo gives depth without bulk, and opens the door for subtle styling play: shirt cuffs peeking out, bracelets over sleeves, collars layered just so. Maybe even a little print clash if you’re feeling brave (or just bored). It’s giving “I read books on the tube, even when the Wi-Fi is working.”

Final touches: Try a sheer shirt for contrast, or swap the jeans for tailored trousers to sharpen the silhouette. Stick with neutrals for a clean finish, or clash colours like a Tibi Colour Math’s expert.

4. Boho Dress + Blazer + Boots

This is the outfit you wear when you want to look romantic but also like you pay your taxes early. The boho dress brings softness and movement—ruffles, volume, maybe even a print with mysterious feminine energy, but the blazer sharpens it all up. Suddenly it’s less “I wandered into a field,” and more “I styled that field for a campaign shoot.”

Then come the boots. Not dainty ones—boots with presence. A tall leather boot says autumn, authority, and possibly horse girl in a good way. A chunky moto boot adds contrast that says don’t mistake the ruffles for weakness.

Final touches: Try a suede or leather blazer to keep the textures rich, or a checked wool one for full vintage academic energy. Add a pendant necklace, or better, no jewelry, just a slightly judgmental stare. The vibe is “romantic with boundaries.”

Outfit 1: Suede blazer / necklace / pink dress / shoulder bag / boots // Outfit 2: Green dress / necklace / leather blazer / Gucci bag / biker boots
