A five-step method for building better outfits, starting with the piece you actually want to wear.

You know those days when you’re standing in front of your wardrobe thinking:
“I just want to wear this.”

Maybe it’s a skirt you love.
Maybe it’s a jacket that deserves an audience.
Maybe it’s a pair of new boots you’re emotionally dependent on.

That item is the protagonist of your outfit— and it’s a perfectly valid way to build an outfit. In fact, it’s how most real-life dressing happens. The key is just knowing what to add around it to make the whole thing feel cohesive. To build the story around it.

Here’s how I do it.

🎬 Step 1: Identify the Protagonist

Name the piece. Call it out. Give it the leading role.

Is it structured? Soft? Bold? Relaxed? Is this casual? Sharp? Soft? Structured? Playful? Polished?
Knowing the vibe of the piece helps you shape the rest of the cast.

🎭 Step 2: Balance the Scene

Now bring in the supporting actors — the contrasts that make your protagonist shine.

  • Oversized? Pair it with something fitted.

  • Bold? Ground it with something neutral.

  • Sweet or feminine? Add edge, or keep it clean.

You’re creating balance, not symmetry. The tension is what makes it interesting.

🪡 Step 3: Anchor with the Basics

Your best basics are the quiet professionals. They show up, do the work, and never upstage the lead.

Think:

  • Clean tanks or tees

  • Your go-to trousers or denim

  • A jacket, cardigan, or knit that pulls the look together

They’re not flashy — they’re functional. And that’s what makes the whole outfit feel effortless.

✨ Step 4: Add the Details That Make It Yours

Accessories are the scene-stealers.
They shift the mood, define the tone, and tell us who this protagonist is.

  • A belt to change the silhouette

  • A bag that adds texture or energy

  • Jewellery, shoes, or a swipe of lipstick that says you meant to do this

This is where styling becomes storytelling.
