Nothing sparks an identity crisis faster than a pair of trousers that won’t zip.

You’re shopping. You reach for a pair of trousers, a dress, a top in your size. The one you’ve worked your ass off to maintain. The number that’s supposed to mean something. And then... it doesn’t fit.

Cue the spiral: “If I’m not this size, who am I?”

Instead of grabbing the next size, you get frustrated. Angry. You leave the store empty-handed and full of silent rage at your own body. You blame yourself, not the scam that is fashion industry sizing.

Here’s the truth Zara won’t tell you—sizing is fake. It’s a suggestion. A guess. A shot in the dark made by a designer who’s never met you. And yet we still let those tiny tags decide how we feel about ourselves. If a pair of trousers doesn’t fit, we don’t blame the trousers. We blame our thighs. It's like blaming your foot for not fitting into a shoe made for a squirrel.

Let’s break up with the myth of “the right size” and start dressing for what actually matters: how it fits, how it feels, and how you live in it.

Ah yes, the golden era of wellness!

The Inconsistency is Real

Welcome to the Hunger Games of modern shopping, where the odds are never in your favour and each brand is playing a different sport. One brand’s size 8 is another brand’s size 2, and somewhere out there, a petite extra-small is large enough to shelter a family of raccoons.

Here’s the secret the industry doesn’t want you to know (probably because they’re too busy fitting garments on one very tall intern named Giselle): there is no universal sizing system.

Different brands use different fit models—that’s the human being they build their sample clothes around. Some fit models are straight-sized. Some are plus. Some are 19-year-old Swedish volleyball players who apparently have never met a piece of bread.

Back when women were reduced to measurements on a chart… oh wait, still happening

Fabric and Fit

Let’s talk about why your usual size fits perfectly in one item and then makes you feel like a stuffed sausage in another. Spoiler: it’s not your fault. It’s the cut, the fabric, and the silhouette.

✨ Want the full story? Here’s what’s behind the paywall:

  • Why fabric matters more than size—how silk, denim, and stretch can make or break a fit.

  • How I finally made peace with tailoring (yes, including the tragic charity shop trousers story).

  • My Stylist’s Gospel: why fit is king, not size—and the brands that actually get it.

  • The pep talk you need the next time you’re side-eyeing a dressing room mirror.
