Because yes, you actually do own clothes — and I’ll show you how to make them work.

We all have those days—you know, the ones where you’re standing in front of your wardrobe like it’s a magical vending machine that’s going to spit out your dream look if you glare at it long enough

There’s no inspiration. You feel rough. Bloated, maybe (hi, me too!). You want to be comfortable but also want to feel good—and let’s face it, look good—because you love fashion. You have clothes. So many clothes. They are staring at you. And yet... nothing feels right?? The guilt of having “nothing to wear” while owning 43 variations of the same white t-shirt? Immense.

Here’s the good news: this doesn’t have to turn into a meltdown. Getting dressed on those “nothing works” days isn’t about overhauling your closet or buying something new—it’s about having a few reliable tricks to lean on.

These are the exact steps I use when I’m stuck. Simple, practical shortcuts that get me out the door feeling like myself, without tearing through every hanger I own.

1. Dress for The Mood You Want

Forget what looks “appropriate” and start with how you want to feel. Do you want to look polished? Effortlessly cool? A little bit undone? Sexy? Naming the feeling first makes the outfit search ten times easier. Be specific—even if it feels silly. Deciding on the vibe is what narrows the choices and saves you from trying on things you don’t feel like wearing.

For me, the magic formula is always: comfortable + cool, a bit undone. Even if nobody else gets it, I want to look in the mirror and think, yes, that feels like me.

2. Let the Forecast Pick Half Your Outfit

Weather is the silent stylist in the room. Too hot, too damp, too cold—you’ll regret ignoring it. Look outside, check the app, and let practicality narrow your choices. Eliminating the wrong fabrics or layers upfront saves you the drama later.

For me, this plays out differently depending on where I am. In London, it’s about survival: will it rain today, and will we get three mini seasons before lunch? In Gran Canaria, it’s the opposite—checking the humidity levels and deciding if I need to throw a bikini in my bag “just in case.”

That’s why outerwear matters. The right jacket or coat is more than practical—it’s the finishing layer that can pull an outfit together. Not everyone needs a Barbour, but everyone does need a piece that balances practicality with personality.

3. Give Trends a Gut Check

Every year, a few styles take over — and yes, hopping on a trend can be a quick way to update your wardrobe. The danger is committing to pieces that aren’t actually your vibe. Especially if they’re expensive.

Remember the oversized leather blazer moment? They were everywhere. It’s not a new piece — it’s been iconic since the ‘90s — but suddenly every corner of Instagram had one. I wasn’t sure it suited me (I’ve always been a biker-jacket girl), so I played it safe and found one second-hand. Turns out, I wear it constantly. Now I’m ready to invest in a better version because I know it works for me — this one from Massimo Dutti is on my wishlist, and at the point of sending smoke signals, carrier pigeons, and telepathic messages to my husband so he finally takes the hint.

That’s the thing: the leather blazer is still an “it” piece, but it’s not in the spotlight anymore. I love it, which makes it worth my money (or my husband’s). I’d rather buy another leather blazer than chase some technical jacket that’s blowing up on social media but doesn’t tickle my fashion sense in the slightest.

Before you buy, ask yourself: Will I still want to wear this when Instagram forgets about it? Does it feel like my style, or do I just want it because I’ve seen it everywhere?

Kelly Williams from Midimalist put it perfectly:

“That first reaction should be weighed heavily as it relates to the first time you see something. Your gut is a pretty good judge.”

Trends aren’t the enemy. Just make sure they’re working for you, not against your style identity.

1 Suede jacket, 2 Green suede jacket, 3 Burgundy leather jacket, 4 Bomber jacket, 5 Leopard print jacket, 6 Pink coat, 7 Leather blazer, 8 Pale yellow jacket, 9 Leather jacket, 10 Suede blazer.

4. Rely on Your No-Fail Outfit Equations

This isn’t the time to reinvent yourself—or to cosplay your favourite influencer. Outfit formulas exist for a reason: they work. They’re not about fashion theory; they’re about making you feel good in the clothes you already own (and paid good money for).

Find a few that you love, and you’ll cut down those “nothing to wear” days dramatically.

You can see some of my favourite outfit formulas here — and I’ve also put together 7 transitional dressing formulas (with more coming) to save you on those tricky in-between weather days.

5. My Secret Weapon? Dresses.

I collect dresses like a raccoon hoards shiny things. They’re easy, they’re one-and-done, and when it's too warm for layering, they save the day.

Even when formulas don’t work, a good dress does, for me!

And here’s the bigger point: everyone has a “secret weapon” piece. For me, is dresses. For you, it might be graphic tees, blazers, or a rotation of striped shirts you keep buying on repeat. Instead of feeling guilty about it, make it your signature, your super-power. Turn that so-called bad habit into the star of your wardrobe—it’s what makes your style feel intentional and personal.

1 Floaty dress, 2 Denim dress, 3 Printed dress, 4 Brown dress, 5 Mini denim dress, 6 Check dress, 7 Mini black dress, 8 Suede dress.

6. Footwear: The Outfit Transformer

Most people forget this part. Shoes can drag your outfit back into 2025 with no effort. I don’t mean expensive stilettos or “Made in Italy” museum pieces—I mean cool shoes. The ones that give an outfit its edge.

I have this one dress I bought more than six years ago, that I love, it’s a lemon print dress which feels way too girly and feminine for me, so I pair it with my leather flip flops. Suddenly, it’s less “garden party Barbie” and more “cool person who doesn’t try too hard.”

So ask yourself: what shoes will make this feel more like me? Maybe it’s chunky trainers. Maybe it’s cowboy boots. Maybe it’s those metallic flats you’ve been scared to wear. I love how Ardas Chandra has been wearing hers non-stop, proof that gold shoes go with everything!

Modern shoes make old clothes feel new. You don't need a new wardrobe. You need a new perspective at ankle level.

1 Black loafers, 2 Snake print flats, 3 Black mules, 4 Studded flats, 5 Gold ballerina flats, 6 Leopard print loafers, 7 Red boots, 8 Burgundy moccasins, 9 Cowboy boots, 10 Studded flat shoes.
