When I first started working in personal styling, it was all about putting people into neat little boxes: Boho. Rock chick. Classic. Minimalist. Like we were all just walking Pinterest boards waiting to be labelled.
But after working with hundreds of people over the past 20 years, and watching my own style do everything from evolve to full-on spiral, I’ve realised how impossible it is to define someone’s style with a single word.
Style shifts. Life changes. We grow, shrink, glow up, burn out, start over. Our wardrobes reflect all of it.
I went through a phase a couple of years ago where I bought an embarrassing amount of beige; obsessed with Succession, I became another quiet luxury cliché. And while I can appreciate the subtle power of a good neutral, I’ve always been drawn to colour, texture, drama, a bit of joyful chaos. I’m a maximalist at heart, even when I’m in denial and holding another camel cashmere jumper.
The point is: style isn’t static. It’s a living mood board of who you are, where you’ve been, and what you’re becoming. So if your wardrobe looks like a plot twist… good. That means you’re evolving.
You don’t need a brand-new wardrobe to have style. In fact, your current wardrobe is probably already telling you what your style is.
What you need is a little curiosity and the right kind of inspiration.
Personally? Mine lives in five chaotic Pinterest boards, a camera roll full of screenshots, and a growing archive of “I could totally pull this off” saved posts.
Because style isn’t about perfection, it’s about casting yourself well. You’re the lead in your own story, and your clothes are part of the script. What does your character wear when she’s confident? Grounded? Starting over? What version of you shows up when you put on those boots, that jacket, that one shirt that makes you walk a little taller?
I’ve always believed that personal style starts with instinct. You already know what suits you, you’ve just stopped listening. Or maybe that voice is buried under three seasons of fast fashion confusion and too many sponsored haul videos shouting over it.
If you’re feeling lost, stuck, or just bored with your own costume changes, try this: a five-step reset to help your real style resurface.
Lights, closet, action.
